Hey guys,

I moved to Austin a couple of months ago and am enjoying it a lot. However I still haven't met very many friends or found a "community".

I don't drink, smoke or go to bars much. I'm looking for more alternative, healthy, "hippie", kinda "New Age" but not too woo-woo, type of folks. People who are into veganism, farmers markets, DIY, simple living, meditation, yoga, artists, Burning Man, etc....

Those type of people should be easy to find in Austin right? :-)

Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I am not a hippie type, but if I want to hang out with people who enjoy the same things you do, I would do those things, and try to meet people while doing them. So, you could take a yoga class, and meet your fellow classmates, hang out at the local vegan store/restaurant, take a meditation class, etc etc. The hard part is for me is actually extending a hand and saying "Hi, I am Blakesq, whats your name?" But once you get over that hump, you should do fine. Good luck.

Well, try Whole Foods, the various farmers markets in the area (pick one or two and attend regularly and get to know the folks there), there's quite a few Meetups that might help. For example, the Austin Progressive Vegetarian Meetup Group, among others. There's meetups on all sorts of topics, quite a few on meditation. There's a waiting list of people who are interested in a Burning Man meetup; maybe you could start one and meet folks that way. There's the Austin Simplicity (http://simplicity.meetup.com/94/ - broken link)Meetup Group. If you're pagan, perchance, there's CMA (the Council for Magickal Arts). Lots of places, really. Just do what you enjoy doing, and you should meet like-minded people.

Actually Wheatsville or Central Market are better for that right now with lots of progressives boycotting Whole Foods.

I've been gone awhile, so not sure of what's still there, but checking out local music (live or at Waterloo for some new finds for your IPOD) [you don't have to drink or do it at bars-- live music is everywhere in Austin. Shady Grove used to have great live music certain nights], hanging at Barton Springs, batwatching, and getting some exercise on the Hike and Bike Trail may also yield decent results. Lots of fun folks in Austin who are into what you like.

You described perfectly the tug and pull of wanting to find like-minded people, but those who aren't too "woo woo", or as I call them "airy faerie".

I agree with the other ideas. Where do people like you hang out and what do they do? Go and be found. They are looking for you as much as you are looking for them.

My suggestions:
- Yoga Classes (easy pick). Yoga Yoga has an extensive schedule and multiple locations.
Yoga Yoga Austin

- Improv class at the Hideout Theater.
Classes « The Hideout Theatre

- Volunteer at Habitat for Humanity. You spend a half day or full day with people, which is a good way to get to know people and decide if you want to hang out later.
AustinHabitat.org: Volunteer (http://www.austinhabitat.org/volunteer/index.php - broken link)

Finally, take your "friend vitamin" every day. It's called B1.

Welcome to Austin. Enjoy your life here!

Steve
