Today the National Weather Service is talking about the possibility of "downbursts". These are generally associated with straight line winds. Has anyone had any experience with these around here?

Denton County, Texas - Downburst

A friend in AZ had his entire aluminum porch awning ripped off and twisted like a straw by a downburst. Also ripped the huge swamp cooler off the roof and placed it not-so-gently across the street.

No damage to any other properties.

The second says Midland / Odessa... Are you just curious if they exist in Austin? Downburst - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm pretty sure they're not good for air travel; wouldn't want to get caught in one during descent.

this hazardous weather outlook is for portions of southeast texas.

.day one...today and tonight

an upper level disturbance will combine with a moist and unstable
airmass to result in scattered showers and thunderstorms across
southeast texas through tonight. The primary threats with these
storms will be gusty winds...brief heavy downpours...and cloud-to-
ground lightning. The potential exists for one or two storms to
become severe with the primary threat being damaging downburst

*raises hand. A few years ago some straight line winds did some major damage to my home and the home behind me but never touched the homes on either side of me. Very odd how they travel and you can see their path of destruction. Lost about 75% of my roof shingles.

Another one came through a few years later and missed me but got my 2 neighbors who also lost most of their roof shingles. One even had the playscape blown hundreds of feet away.

Then yet another time we came home to see the trampoline that used to be in the back yard wrapped around the phone pole at the street. No damage to anything else, not even the fence. Can only imagine it must have been picked up like the house in Wizard of Oz

Last time those type of winds came through got most of my neighbors roofs with shingles. I have a metal roof and got no damage but it caved in my above ground pool.

So yeah, I've had some first hand experience over the years.
