It is always a nice change when a top 10 list comes out and Austin is not on it. Add any that you are aware of.

Seattle and Madison, Wisc. slowly ebbed off those lists, and were the better for it, as things got back to normal, and the PR hype agents went into permanent hibernation......looks like Austin might be getting that way(re:normal)

But now they are hyping other Texas Cities and communities...Keller, San Antonio (mentioned in several of those lists), Ft. Worth, Dallas, Corpus Christi and Houston.

As Austin has grown it has lost some of the small town appeal that attracted people and has developed more of the same problems that larger cities have had. I think Austin has reached the point where it is better off with a slower growth rate. Give us a chance to deal with the problems growth brings.

To be fair and accurate - that first link is for "best places to live -America's best small towns" Even if you're from NYC, it's a stretch to call Austin a small town. And Seattle never got back to "normal" after falling off of those lists, it still has awful traffic and an inflated cost of living.

And link number two has Austin as # 8 for best large cities for vegetarians.

You are correct on both counts. I didn't read those two carefully enough. Thanks for correcting this.

Unfortunately Austin used to be a peaceful, affordable, civil and simple place to live until every major publication in the country in the last 10 years touted it as one of the best cities in America. Today, it is over run with Californians, New Yorkers, Floridians, Louisianans, etc. - all in the name of change. The change however has been primarily negative. Traffic, crime and panhandling are up 100%. The cost of living has increased significantly since 2000. Generic chains are killing small businesses and folks are constantly in a hurry to the trendiest establishments. Austin is now a reflection of the dysfunctional attitudes and lifestyles of all the soulless and directionless carpetbaggers.

Please. I moved here in 2001, and Austin is a thousand times better than it was then. It is now possible to get a decent cappucino in this town. There are much better restaurants across the board. Downtown is actually a viable, vibrant and exciting place to live. South Congress is no longer a low rent red light district - though that I kinda miss. The Blanton has opened. The Long Center has opened. The East Side is booming with great nightlife. Hippy Hollow and Barton Springs are still there. The sleepy charm has remained, but there are increasingly more and more lifestyle options. And Austin remains one of the safest MSA'a over 1000 000 people in the U.S.. And since I only ever get on a highway to leave town for a roadtrip, as far as I am concerned. there is no traffic in Austin!

I don't know. I have to agree with wianti's point but I do think that Austin has improved in some areas. Like wianti mentioned, I remember when publications all over the US said that Austin was considered the most affordable best place to live, etc. and Michael Dell came on scene then all of the sudden people in droves are moving to Austin. I think that is good and bad. Most, not all, people I know that live in Austin aren't from Austin or even TX. They are mostly from Louisiana of all places.

Most of these rankings are such garbage. Do the people who create these crazy listings, actually LIVE in the places before they make these assumptions?
