Wife and I are looking for a rental in/near Austin to share with my sister-in-law while we all get ourselves situated. We're all moving from out of state to Austin and want to find a place we can share to make that first year easier.

Here's roughly what we're looking for:
- 3BR/2BA - apartment, townhouse, etc
- 1500ish sq ft (sister-in-law has a larger dog, so we need more space)
- hopefully $1/sq ft or less.
- about 20 miles or less of downtown
- Not in the ghetto

I've searched Craigslist a lot and have found random places (even some downtown) all over that fit the criteria, just no consistent areas that work. Anderson Mill seems to regularly have places that fit those specs. Are there any other towns/neighborhoods we should regularly be checking?

Oh and I should note - no kids, schools don't matter. Just plan on having a good time downtown a lot and want fairly convenient access.

You shouldn't have any trouble finding what you want in that price range. SW Austin, the Oak Hill area is only 10 miles from downtown and I have seen lots of ads in the paper for 3/2/2 for less then $1500/month. So you can probably get something bigger or closer into town for that price.

You might want to try searching the MLS (austinhomesearch.com) or using a realtor to help you find a house for lease. Are you working downtown or just want to be close to it? I would not rent in Anderson Mill if you work downtown. As CaptnRn said, SW or Oak Hill would be a better choice.

Ideally, you will want to locate as close to work as possible. And yes, you should be able to find a decent place to rent for $1500 or so.

Thanks for the tip Moonlady. Here in Milwaukee it is rare for a home to be leased... seems like it's pretty common down there. Never would've thought of using a realtor for that.

We are planning to move in the spring, so neither of us have jobs yet. We've been looking and most of the positions we'd go after have been pretty close to downtown. (I'm in project management, wife is in finance - so most places we'd work for tend to be near the city).

I'll check into the SW area more. I think when we visited over the summer we didn't get much further SW than Barton Hills or maybe east Oak Hill. But I recall everything being nice around there.

Can anyone recommend a specific realtor for leases? I've found plenty of nice looking places on the austinhomesearch.com site, but was wondering if anyone has a better reputation than the rest.

I sent you a DM with the agent we used when we moved down here.
