Not a fan of TexMex but I can sympathize in that I dearly miss my Baja Mex from So. CA (

I don't really go looking for Tex Mex, but there is definitely a difference between SA and Austin. I love Aldacos, El Mirador, Paloma Blanca and Taco Haven. In Austin, I like Fonda San Miguel, Santa Rita and Matt's. Some of the best taco places in SA are just little mom and pops.

Pappasito's ROCKS! I didn't know they had one in Austin? I've seen Pappadeaux here in SA, is there a Pappasito's too? I eill have to check it out.

I love all Tex-Mex, and kinda like the slight differences found throughout our state.

I have not tried the Morelia Grill or Jardin Corona. I will give one of them a try.
Someone asked earlier about Azul Tequila if that is the same place that had a place in Round Rock where K Bobs used to be, than yes I have tried it and it was very good. I wasnot aware there was one in South Austin I will have to head down there this weekend.

That wasn't it... that was... damn, I can't remember the name. It was a "local" chain with another few locations in PVille and around... but not Azul Tequilla. It was quite good but it only lasted maybe 6-8 months. A new steakhouse opened in there last week - wife and I went and the food was okay, but it was WAY overpriced. It's the EXACT same food/menu from Tio Dans/Little Red Wagon, same owners, employees, food, etc... just here they actually bring the food to you after you stand in line and order it. If we want that food, we'll go to Little Red Wagon for half the price.

Azul Tequila did have a Round Rock location which has since closed (not sure if it was where K-Bobs used to be). Wish they still had it, as I have to drive from 15 miles north of Georgetown down to South Austin to eat there (which I will do). The location in South Austin is at Ben White and South Lamar right next door to Target.

No one in Austin knows how to make a proper flour tortilla which everyone in SA can do with ease.

I've been told that the reason for the difference between San Antonio and Austin flour tortillas is the water, which as a cook and baker makes sense to me.

I grew up in San Antonio but moved to Austin 25 years ago. The thing that we noticed right away is that everything here is served with black beans unless one specifies refried or charro. Also, food there is a few bucks cheaper per plate (or used to be anyway). There is a taste component missing and I think it may be that lard is used in SA Tex-Mex. I haven't found anything comparable but El Mercado has a few dishes that are close. And some of the authentic places in East Austin (not the yuppy ones) may have some similar dishes.

That's weird, I hardly ever see black beans (or if they're available, I have to ask for them). I just assume that I'll be getting refried beans with my TexMex.
