Maybe someone in the house spilled some water and didn't tell you?

No four legged animals in the house. And no, no one spilled water there:-))

Now that we had couple of dry days, the carpet is almost dried out. But today has more rains forecast and I shudder to think what's going to happen after:-(

Well, when the rains come definitely get a ladder and feel the drywall in the ceiling above.. even if it hasn't discolored yet, you should feel it if it is a leak. You could also place a pan or something on top of the wettest part, and see if anything collects.

Other than that, the answer will likely be evident by pulling up the carpet in the area, something that a handyman can do.

I have pulled the carpet back in the lower level of a home built on Cat Mountain,(360 & Spicewood, you can see it up on the side of the steep hill.) only to see a natural spring peculating, up through a crack in the slab. No plumping leaks, according to a pressure test.
