I'm real flakey when it comes to exercising, so I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on something I may only use once or twice. Does anyone have a used mountain bike?

I think it is almost certain you will not continue with the sport if you buy a crappy bike and ride alone. The cheap bike will be heavy, shift poorly and frustrate you.
Shop smart on Craigslist, get something useful. Find a group to ride with. If you have fun you're on your way. If you hate it - sell your bike on Craigslist and you might not lose much at all.
