We are transplants and are looking for a nice cabin or lake house within about two hours of Austin. Lake Travis is not appealing; we're looking for a smallish, no-motor-boat lake, say 50+ acres. We don't need waterfront but would like to be only a short drive/walk from a lake.
I've heard Lakes LBJ, Buchanon and Burnet (?) might fit the bill... Does anyone have any other suggestions on where we should look?
Thanks in advance.

LBJ and Buchanan are beautiful lakes and partially stay that way because of their distance from a major metro area; however, they do have motor boats on them...you just may not know it, depending on where you live. Also, they are slightly more than 50 acres...Lake Buchanan is ~22,000 acres and LBJ is ~6,500 acres.

A link to TPWD list of major central Texas lakes:

Small lakes are rare in Texas, due to the fact that they are all man-made. It is rare that someone goes out and builds a dam just to hold a small amount of water....if you go to all that effort, they usually make a pretty big one. There are a few power plant lakes (but they are usually very warm) that are small.

Personally, I would check out Lake Medina or Lake Buchanan. They are much less built up and are in nice parts of the hill country.

Lake Buchanan, Lake Georgetown, Granger Lake, Bastrop Lake. Georgetown, Granger, and Bastrop are all smaller than Buchanan, Travis, or Canyon, or LBJ, but those, too, also accomodate boats. Of all of those, Buchanan will probably very soon get built up when people discover its a little cheaper than living on Travis. None of the other lakes have waterfront homes, but do have homes nearby.

What about Lake Conroe above Houston? They probably allow motor boats though. I was going to suggest to maybe look into the Hollows on Lake Travis but you said that lake doesn't do it for you. We are up here in Granbury on the lake but that would be to far for you and we do allow motor boats too.
Well, Good Luck!

I would recommend lake pflugerville. Last time I checked the prices were excellent, it is 180 acres and doesnt allow motor boats. It is just being developed. It is also quite close to austin such that you could actually live there.
