I'm sure this question has been asked before. I did a general search, but did not find it. I'm a native Texan. Been living in Fontana, CA for
12 years. [job related] Now I' back home in Texas. Want to visit Austin. Never been there. I have heard the Texas Music Museum is a cool place to visit. Also, the University of Texas should have some Libraries & Museums worth visiting. I'm only semi computer literate, so how can I find more info on places to see? Would definitely appreciate any help. Thanks!

Austin doesn't really have a Museum Row, so to speak, the closest bona fide museum is the bob bullock Texas History Museum, but there isn't much here that would resemble a sustantial museum in other cities. The Blanton Art Museum is trying to get larger, and was an extension of the universities' art program.....

I'm sure others can fill you in on smaller museums spread throughout the region...
BTW, if you like history, especially Texas orientated, the LBJ Library is a great place, more like something you would see in DC, with tons of historical exhibits/dioramas..

Hi eaton72, I visited Austin recently as a newcomer, and when my husband was working I had plenty of time to look round museums. The Bob Bullock museum was a little disappointing (but that was the last place I visited, so I may have been a little museumed-out by that day), LBJ museum fantastic. The state capitol and visitors centre is good as well. Blanton was worth a visit.

Have been in Austin for a few years and there are not really any great museums here esp when you compare it to Houston. The Capitol is a good place to visit. Take the guided tour to get a lot of Texas trivia and get a primer on Texas history.

The Texas Natural History Museum at UT is fun for kids. Laguna Gloria is in a beautiful facility. I like the Umlauf Sculpture Garden, too.

I agree that the Bob Bullock Museum isn't that great. But I think the LBJ Library and Ransom Center are pretty cool.

Nomadic beat me to it. That list of some of the museums in Austin should keep you busy for a while!

UT does, indeed, have libraries and museums, primary among them being the Perry-Castaneda Library.

I don't quite know what to say. I scooped you? You're something of a celebrity in these parts.

P.S. Harry Ransom Center. Best underutilized secret in these parts. Free, constantly offering public programming, and one of the few places a bibliophile like yours truly can get a glimpse of an original Gutenberg Bible.
