Hello everyone,

I know this may sound like a silly question for you Texans, but do you have furnaces in your homes? I have a cousin who says that they don't have furnaces in the homes there. I know that you don't really need them, but it does get cold at night. What do you do in apartments and homes?

Thank you in advance.

Dawn

I don't know where your cousin got his/her information, but he/she is very much misinformed.

We need them and we have them (whether gas or electric) in every part of the state, including the warmest southern parts. However, some of the really older homes that have not been updated are heated by gas stoves, panel-ray wall units, et al.

According to the City-Data Austin Data web page

//www.city-data.com/city/Austin-Texas.html

Most commonly used house heating fuel:
Utility gas (52%)
Electricity (46%)
Bottled, tank, or LP gas (1%)

I have never lived in a house or apartment in Austin that did not have a furnace. it does get below freezing here on occasion.

I have my heat on now. I think it's 68* outside. We have an electric furnace. Never heard of anyone not having heat or not having a furnace. Houses and apartments all come with them.

Thank you all so much for your replies. My cousin lives in Bryan, TX. I guess his home is pretty old. I was a little concerned...but I did figure that you had to have some source of heat.

Thank you again.

A lot of houses only have heat pumps. But folks still refer to them as furnaces. It is because it does not get as cold that folks in the southern parts of this state only have heat pumps.

I don't live in Austin, but the weather there is similar to where I am. I have an all electric home for heating and A/C. I leave my thermostat on 55 degrees. Needless to say, I haven't needed heat yet as the coolest it has gotten in the house is 62 ... so delightful from a blistering and miserable summer.

We think about the brutal summer we had/will have to endure. After doing so, the cold doesn't feel too bad.

It's cheaper than gas.

I'm going to chime in here with we do have a furnace. Many homes I hear heat with a fire place to take the chill off. I found it odd to see so many fireplaces while looking for homes.

Now I'm glad we don't have one. Too much of a mess if you ask me.

And the weather we have been having lately is heaven!! Love it, love it, love it. We went for a stroll at dusk with no jackets and here it is November 27th. Ahhh, it was wonderful.

This past summer? I'm trying to wipe my memory.
