I just saw this story on the local news here in Austin and was appalled. Seriously? An interest-free loan??? That's the best you can do for a veteran who wants to help OTHER veterans???

It seems obvious UT-Austin cannot do better.

No wonder he chose A&M instead - an institution much more in tune with military challenges.

I dunno.....an interest free loan that you pay off when you get reimbursed. Doesn't sound all that awful.

From what I gathered, the problem with the interest free loan was that he wasn't sure when the reimbursement would take place. The VA appears to be the larger culprit in the matter. Even so, I can't blame him for saying no to a loan. Loans can spell bad news.

I can't understand why there couldn't be a uniform approach to the policy. Why is A&M able to accommodate him, but not UT? I believe I heard that there are around 300 veterans enrolled under the auspices of the GI Bill privilege. Enrollment at the university is far in excess of that amount and considering what our veterans do for us . . . I don't know. I guess I just expected a more concerted effort to help out our vets.

Take the interest free loan and quit the liberal bum whining. Apologies to Vets, but to accommodate the needs of the Vet establishes a category of special needs, someting we don't really need to do along with creating new policies and procedures and hiring more employees to work the process. Take the interest free loan. The school has been here before.

Sallie Mae offers a similar solution to college students at participating universities (Michigan, Alabama, Notre Dame, Boston, SUNY, CUNY, others) to defer payment until a loan/grant/scholarship pays off, called Tuition Pay. Don't know if UT participates but probly should. This allows the student to spread payments over the period of a semester or fall/spring year. When the loan/grant/scholarship pays off it goes directly to the school and boom, end of payment plan. One centralized accounting procedure for dozens of schools, reducing administrative overhead for all of them. Take the loan, the process is in place.

That I can recall the gentleman never revealed any ideological biases.

I didn't qualify for an interest free student loan, but I qualified for a normal Federal student loan and even then I didn't have to make a single payment until 6 months after I graduated. Reimbursement would surely have been made before then. It sounds like he gave up going to UT because he didn't want to fill out an extra form.

Having gone to UT, I have always assumed that a large amount of value placed on the degree was because it showed I could successfully navigate the bureaucracy .

Tell me about it...I have to sign up 3 weeks in advance just to see an academic advisor! At least my advisors actually know what they're talking about, though.

The financial aid people are even more inept. Apparently my scholarships all sent my money in to UT, but because I didn't fill out a form telling UT I got the scholarships which they already had with my name on them, they didn't disburse the money. UT also neglected to tell me I needed to fill out the form, and it wasn't on the website either. It's a joke.

But what do you expect from a public university serving 50,000. At least I'm getting the best value education in the state at $8k tuition.
