Does anyone have any idea what Pharmacists pay is in Austin? We had considered California and I was shocked that the wages were so low in Southern California and there were not a lot of openings. In Ohio I have heard of new grads getting 30K sign on bonuses for retail as the norm. In Calif. they were talking 5K for bonuses.

Any ideas? Any good places to try to get into or places to avoid?

Thanks!

I have a cousin who's a pharmacist. I could ask him, although he's not in Austin but may have an idea.

Right now based on what I've been offered and what I've read via recruiters, the best areas for us pill pushers insofar as salary vs. cost-of-living goes are Tennessee, PARTS of Florida, parts of Texas, inner city anywhere, and rural anywhere. I just got a job offer in Huntington, WV for $110,000 + $20,000 sign on + $5000 relocation. You can buy a freakin mansion in Huntington for $250,000, easy. I could live like a bloody king there.

Honestly, if I could wind up anywhere, I'd wind up in Austin, but I have reservations because Austin is the home of UT School of Pharmacy and pharmacy school towns usually have crummy wages compared to the rest of the state. I know for a FACT that there are some PharmDs up in Dallas making some serious bank.

If you get the chance, check out the Student Doctor forums at http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=122. There are some pharmacists from Texas that actively post on the PharmD forums there. I bet they would be able to give you a better idea than a new grad from West Virginia like me.

I know a manager who worked at Albertsons before they closed. I recall she said a pharmacist made $45/hr, and with OT, she was making over $100K per year. This was for a store that was not busy, so it was not even really work in her mind, and wished she was the pharmacist! This was a store in Round Rock.

That kind of money meant she was probably living next to several Dell managers...

Thanks! Well that is just about $10 an hour less than here. I guess it balances out because you don't pay state taxes, but then the property taxes are bad. See, they get you any way they can.

California they were paying about $50 an hour.

That's OK I would rather have less money and live in Texas than have more money and live here.

BTW~ Thanks WVUPharm I wll look into the site you sent. Are you going to accept a position in WV? Is that where you are from?

We are trying to get out of the snow so no job offer would sound good to us from this area. LOL We want sunshine and no snowplows!

Good luck!

Looks like it's WV for me. And, yes, West Virginian born and raised. The wife doesn't graduate pharmacy school until May '09, so I'm stuck in Morgantown until then. But as soon as she walks across that stage we're outta here!

If warmth is your goal, check out the Sarasota area. I think it's on Walgreens "featured areas" list. Their featured areas are a good place to start. If Wags is desperate, chances are others are hiring, too.

Default Hey WVU207

Good luck to you two. It's a great career. You picked a good one. There is not a day that goes by that there are not job offers in the mailbox or recruiters on the answer machine.

The best career choice you could have made!

Pharmacists make excellent money everywhere. I am wondering what kind of salary you are speaking of for California? In Texas the average seems to be around 90K, and sign-ons are vasilating around $5K to $10K..... In San Antonio.
