My husband will be working on Research, near Braker if I am reading the map correctly. The Stratum building, if anyone is familiar. We are looking to rent a house, within these parameters:

1. 3+ BR
2. 2,000 +/- sq feet
3. 1/4 acre or more yard- big enough that my 4 year old isn't constantly throwing frisbees and baseballs over the fence like he does in our current postage stamp.
4. 30-40 mins commute (of course, shorter is better, but I'd rather have him commute than pay out the nose in a rental)
5. $1,500-1,800 rent (flexible here)
6. Family friendly neighborhood (parks, kids can ride bikes in the street, etc). I'm not concerned about schools, although I think that we would want to live around people who care about good schools.

When we visited a few years ago, liked the hilly areas with lots of trees, but we were looking with an eye to buy, not rent, at the time so I guess that's a little less important now. I'd love any suggestions!

Here's another option: Scofield Farms.

I've never even heard of Scofield Farms. I'll definitely have to check that out!

And where he will be working is considered NW Hills? I don't know why I have such a hard time orienting myself in Austin. I've lived in larger cities with complicated roads (Boston, I'm looking at you!) but for some reason I get really turned around here.

No, I would consider that area NW Austin. For one thing, there are no hills.. it's just to the north & east of them. Some might also call the Braker and Research area the Arboretum area. It's a little farther out than Northwest Hills, but most people would find the Northwest Hills area more desirable because of it's a little closer in and much more expensive (to buy). Northwest Hills would still be only about a 5 minute drive to Research & Braker, though.

If you wanted to live really close, you might look at Great Hills (hilly), Oak Forest (small hills), Mesa Park (flat), and Walnut Crossing(flat) neighborhoods. Maybe even Lakewood(hilly) on 360 if you are interested in dramatic views and can find something at $1650.
