I think it's mostly a younger generation thing, where appearances are everything. If they refer to Austin with it's traditional nickname, the "City of the Violet Crown", it's not gonna sound as rough and tough as the ATX. To many young people, coming from a rough town or a rough neighborhood is like a badge of honor. Coming from the mean streets of East Austin is more worth more street cred than coming from Westlake, Bee Cave or Round Rock.

Sometimes I like to refer to Wm Cannon as "The W-C". I kinda like it. It has a good flow to it as it rolls easily off the tongue, such as, "'I'ma gonna take the W-C to the H-E-B.".

I sometimes refer to Loop 1 as "The Mo"; but it hasn't caught on....yet.

I see "ATX" most often in my dating apps when guys are trying to seem cool by describing all the places they've lived by using city nicknames or whatever.

Well, that pretty much describes my impression of the person when I hear it used. Though I haven't dated in quite a while.

"ATX" sounds silly as it has more syllables than "Austin", and I agree it's a clear ripoff off ATL.
