Chalk up another story of too much salt in Texas. I was in San Antonio yesterday, ate at a Mexican restaraunt, had the tamale plate. Everything was really good, but way too much salt.

I've travelled alot, been in some other countries too. I've never seen as much salt being used anywhere but here.

I think people in Texas have become accustom to it, so if you were to ask them, they wouldn't think the food is salty.

Well, consider that when you work hard in the heat and thus sweat, you need to make sure to keep your salt consumption up lest you suffer heat stroke and die (thus salt tablets). Now, consider who native Texans are descended from and how the country was settled and what the weather is like, and perhaps it will make more sense.

That could be true. I also do not find the food oversalted. I actually add salt to things. I can't eat unsalted french fries whether they're from Mickey D's or anywhere else. Restaurants do use a lot of salt, but you can watch "secrets of a restaurant chef" on Foodnetwork to learn that. Even so, I don't taste the salt. I won't deny that it doesn't happen from time to time though. I've had tacos where the picadillo was obviously salty to me and so I didn't add any extra.

I'm not much of a salt person, I don' think it's healthy in high quantitites. Also, most restaurants that over salt do so to cover up a lack of taste.

I don't find the food to be too salty. Some exceptions...national chain restaurants that buy prepared meats, etc from food suppliers. Much of the food at places like Luby's is too salty for what they're serving, but some foods should be reasonably salty, like french fries. My native Texan husband doesn't share my love of one of the saltiest foods I know of..."country" ham. It is extremely so, but a little slice of heaven to me. It's hard to go too long without a taste of home...old ham and beaten biscuits.

For me, it's a taste preference, not a health thing. While I can't even imagine not having salt on fries, etc., there can be too much. I like salt, just not in mass quantities.

I guess I think salt should enhance the flavor of the food I'm eating, not overpower it or become the main flavor itself.

Do you find the food here in Austin salty? Is it a Texas thing?

I've been to McDonalds twice since locating here, and both times the hamburger was so salty I threw it away. (I guess that is a good thing)

I had Thanksgiving dinner at one of the Seton Hospitals......and way too salty.

A couple of enchiladas at a Mexican place on S. Lamar..... too salty.

Burger at Dan's on S. Congress.......TOO SALTY

I'd say 50% of the restaraunts I've eaten at here have put too much salt on their food.

Torchy's rules though.

Pretty sure it is your pallet!

Especially when you say Seton Hospital food. It is so bland it needs all the spice it can get. All hospital food is non-salted because a lot of people in Hospitals have high blood pressure.

Fran's on S.Congress too salty??
