I've lived in Austin about three months. In that time I have run into many restaraunts that WAY over salt their food.

Do you find the food here in Austin salty? Is it a Texas thing?

I've been to McDonalds twice since locating here, and both times the hamburger was so salty I threw it away. (I guess that is a good thing)

I had Thanksgiving dinner at one of the Seton Hospitals......and way too salty.

A couple of enchiladas at a Mexican place on S. Lamar..... too salty.

Burger at Dan's on S. Congress.......TOO SALTY

I'd say 50% of the restaraunts I've eaten at here have put too much salt on their food.

Torchy's rules though.

I have found you have to really be serious, and specific about no salt. I don't know if it's truly an Austin thing or not. I eat at McDonald's about twice a month, and I have to "check" the fries in the drive through to make sure they are really no salt fries. When ordering in the restaurant, I can see, and know when to tell them they forgot, and then wait for another basket to cook.

I find Taco Cabana inedible because of excessive salt.

Interesting and good to know since I'm not a salt fan. I can handle a little, but that's it.

I will keep this in mind when eating when we get there. Thanks!

DH (in the food biz) tells me its a Hispanic cook thing. They use a lot of salt by habit.

We've been here about a year and a half and are still amazed at the amount of salt in meat dishes. Many times the veggies are cooked to be flavorless and actually could use a touch of salt; but, the meats(especially beef) are way oversalted. I understand that dry rubs and many other seasonings contain a lot of salt but even stews and meatloaf in most places around have a noticeable amount of added salt.

I guess I don't mind TOO much IF they have really good sweet tea!

I always have to ask for salt packets when I go through restaurant drive-throughs, because the burgers are not salted sufficiently. I thought that was a "the health nuts have taken over Austin and the fast food joints are catering to them" thing.

McDonald's Fries WITHOUT the salt??? Eww.... Sorry, but the best thing about French Fries is the saltiness.

I must ask why? Is the low salt for dietary reasons or taste preference? Because if its dietary, well, you shouldnt ought to be eatin fast food n mcdonalds anyway!! Salt or no salt.

Oh, lest anyone should be concerned because I like a lot of salt, my "white coat" blood pressure (considered to be a bit high because you're already nervous about being in the doctor's office) comes in at 100 over 60.
