I haven't seen one yet in this region of Texas, although we used to see them when I lived in Clear Lake (TX).

They need excessive water, which we lack. I was in Houston a few months back at Hermann Park, and they were swimming around in the pond there. I had to stop some woman's little kid from trying to pet one while his mother sat idly by.

Haven't seen them. Tons of tree rats though, they love pecans.

I had those as pets when I lived in East Texas as a little girl. Really quite intelligent and sweet. Not, not, NOT a good idea to import them for water plant control, though, as they can overrun a place in no time.

One of mine, when it got tired of being played with, would go sit right smack dab in the middle of a ten foot wide patch of poison ivy. Somehow it knew that no one would bother it there!

I haven't ever seen one in Central Texas, though.

Definitely shoot it. They, like all rodents, carry Typhus, which has been prevalent in central Austin lately.

It has?

eta: A quick google turns up that there were 33 cases of probable or confirmed typhus in Austin as of 12-18-2009. Also that if we're going to kill all the rodents, we have to kill all the cats and dogs and opossums, too, because they are carriers. Fleas are the real problem.

Not sure if I can shoot a flea, but it'll be fun to try.
