Hi everyone,

We are a young, engaged couple currently living in Boston and are thinking about moving to Austin. I am white and my fiance is a native New Yorker of Chinese American descent.

While I've grown a bit tired of New England pretentiousness, I do appreciate that we rarely get stared at or treated poorly here because we are a mixed-race couple. I'm worried that that will change when we move. Do you think we would encounter any problems in Austin?

The other place we are thinking about moving to at the moment is South Florida, if anyone has experience there too.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Actually, most people wouldn't even notice. I say this as someone whose son is currently in just such a relationship.

When I first saw the post, I thought you might be referring to a black/white situation. Heck, even out in most of the south that isn't an issue anymore. Per the Asian/White combo, that isn't an issue anywhere I could possibly imagine, except perhaps very rural areas. I can't see that mix an issue anywhere in the USA, and actually would prob get you kudos in areas like Austin, rather than retrobation....

I have to agree with THL. I don't think most people would even notice. My sister's BF is asian. When she goes back home with him (deep country) it's not even noticed. That could be though because many people in my very white family are in interracial relationships, either with hispanics, blacks or asians. Some in my family have problems with black/white relationships, but they don't even notice asians/hispanics as being non white. Go figure.

Hmmm...I am Japanese/American married for 25 years to a Caucasian. Absolutely zero issues in Austin or anywhere else I have been in Texas (lived in Texas since 1975).

I'm mixed race (black/latino & white) & my folks have lived in Austin since the mid 80s. We've never had any problems in Austin. There are some towns we wouldn't stop in while traveling, but you can never be too careful if you're in a place you don't know. Granted, there are some bars, etc that are a little red around here, but my dad loves dive bars (he's black) and he's never had a problem. I don't think anyone would give a second thought to a white/Chinese couple...

Like JayBrown80, many in my very white family are in similar relationships, marriages of 30 years or so. I have asian/caucasian nieces and nephews and asian/caucasian/Navajo grand nieces, I believe another niece will eventually marry her hispanic boyfriend and we have a caucasian/hispanic grand niece on the way from yet another niece. The only resistance has been from the Navajo family's belief that their daughter should marry a Navajo. Outside of that, I don't know of any opposition to these couples. They're all pretty happy here, and wherever they live.

The only place I ever saw prejudice against "orientals" was in the movie "Billy Jack"....I think they filmed that in arizona, around Tucson, so you might want to stay around from those indian reservations/hippie communes out there....and you might want to stay way from Billy Jack as well...
the guy is just plain nuts!
