I just moved here from the Jersey shore in March. If there are any NJ/Philly people, lets get together for Coffee.

hi, well I'm from Bergen Cty, NJ and my family and I are planning a relocation to Austin in Spring/Summer of 2008. I would love to be there sooner but we have things to close out here. How long have you been in Austin, Do you love it as much as I hope we will? We were there last year and fell in love (we lived for a while in Tampa, FL and loved the weather and beaches but not the overcrowding) We also want more property, as a NJian you know how hard that is to come by here!

If you don't mind me asking, where are you in the Austin area? WE are renting a condo on Lake Travis this summer for 10 days and want to really get to know the area - we have 2 sons, 1 will be going into 9th grade and the other into 7th in 2008.

maybe coffee then?

Default I love it here

Only thing I am missing here from NJ is the quality of the Italian food and the Pizza but you can't have everything. I really love Austin and looking forward to a winter without high heating bills

Default Nj couple thinking of Austin!

My husband and I are currently living in the Princeton area of NJ. We are in our early 50's and I am thinking of a corporate relocation- - to a warm place- - we hate the winters in NJ!
We are also thinking of retiring (relative term) in this place. We own a condo in Sarasota and are also looking at Sarasota and Tampa. Have never been to Tampa. We are visiting Austin in Spetember and are excited. When I first mentioned Austin to my husband, said he would not even consider moving to Texas- - however, the more he read about Austin (we are both "progressive thinkers") he is now excited about the prospects.
We have no kids, 4 dogs, 3 cats (our furkids!) and would like to live in a nice upscale area not far from Austin for about 375K- - we could afford more, but the prop taxes are 3.00 per 1,00 which is similar to NJ are are expensive even to us- - I know there is not state income tax, however that is small compared to prop taxes. Is the winter warm? Overall, how do you like it so far??? any comments would be much appreciated.
Sick of NJ!

Hi, Sandyart! I just moved from Lawrenceville (before that Princeton) at the end of March. As a native Texan (grew up on the Gulf Coast), I can honestly say I wouldn't live anywhere else in Texas - this isn't quite Texas so I understand your husband's perspective. I'm loving it here - but I also love Florida beaches so I have to say I don't know which would win if I had the choice....I've never been to Tampa but had a lovely stay in St. Pete once. I live in central Austin so can't give any advice on areas outside the city. Good luck with your decision!!

Philly here.

There's no Pat's or Geno's here.

And I miss Franzone's in Conshohocken. Best d*#m pizza on the planet. I flew back to Philly just for Franzone's a few years back from Atlanta. Their sauce is killer and they barely use cheese.

I miss the culture with the Museum and the galleries, but I don't miss the attitude. Have you done the open gallery tours with wine/cheese on the 1st Friday of every month in downtown Philly? It was a fun and nice event, free too.

People are much nicer in Austin. People were nice in Atlanta, but you can tell the Georgia charm masked some true feelings. People appear to be much more geniune here (gee, I've said this twice now in 2 days...it must be true).

So why don't some of you Philly or especially Chicago transplants start an Italian resturaunt...It seems like a void that needs something good to fill it We have one good pizza resturaunt in town where I'm at, and the owners are transplants from New York and I'm very glad they did it, cause you can only have so much dominos!

Haha, I wish.

I remember the first week I moved from Philly to Atlanta and went to a Philly Connection Restuarant and asked for an Italian Sandwich.

It took me 5 minutes of back and forth Q&A and explaining what was in it.

Suffice it to say, I never ate there again.

I'm not known for being a good cook.

I just like to eat.

We have a friend in Houston from Philly and he says the same thing. His dad just makes his own. He goes to the Asian market and buys really thin cut steak for cheesesteaks, and voila! Even in Houston, says he has a hard time finding a good sandwich.
