Seems like the two cities are going the opposite direction on the jobs front. I mean they have little in common as far as industries go historically but it seems SA is still very much blue collar while Austin is getting even more white collar (e.g. Facebook and a solar power company just last week). If the trend continues in Austin I think home prices will escalate faster while the income gap b/t the professionals and the baristas on South Congress will grow even further.

San Antonio has more jobs that are white collar, it's a white collar city. Finance/Insurance is the largest industry in San Antonio. It has more people employed in this industry than any other Texas city.

I always see San Antonio listed as one of the fattest cities in America. I also read it has a very high percentage of smokers, and that it still has smoking and non smoking sections in many of its restaurants. Right there would do it for me. Smoking in restaurants in 2010 forget that place. I think if someone was a very health conscious person, that kind of enviroment would get on their nerves. It would make it more difficult to meet likeminded people. Yes there may be some gyms but if the overall vibe is not ones's needed vibe, then its the wrong place to be period.

This person would be better off in Austin.

Go drive through Hill Country Village there's houses in there on 5 acre lots and it's in the middle of town off Bitters.

San Antonio banned smoking on 1-1-2004 a quick google search would have pulled up that information.

I think it may be hard to define white vs. blue collar jobs but these per capita incomes illustrate what I was trying to get across:

San Antonio: $17,487
Austin: $24,163

Another telling stat is gross domestic product of metropolitan areas.

San Antonio - 80,896
Austin-Round Rock - 80,077

(measured in millions of dollars for 2008)

That is the estimated 2,031,445 people of SA area produce about the same amount of value in goods and services as the estimated 1,652,602 people in the Austin area.

The GDP's are correct. (So SHSA doesn't complain)

If someone could find one similar for AUS, then you could have a good comparison to see how B/WC the cities are because the State Government's spending and the Tech Industry do have a tendacy to inflate GDP and income numbers for metro areas.

I doubt Austin is that close to San Antonio's GDP. Cost of living, Austin is more expensive, so it would raise Austin's total. Last source I saw San Antonio was billions ahead.
