New-home sales jump in April as prices drop

Sales of new homes soared to a seasonally adjusted rate of 981,000 last month — up an eye-popping 16% from March — the Commerce Department said Thursday. But don't release the balloons just yet.

It's too soon to celebrate a turnaround in the real estate market, despite news that new-home sales in April posted their biggest surge in 14 years.

"The signals I'm getting from the big companies, from their experience in April, I'd say things are still moving downward," said David Seiders, chief economist for the NAHB.

There are, though, bright spots where there are "glimmers of strength," said Toll CEO Robert Toll, including the New York metro area, Philadelphia suburbs, Delaware, Austin and Dallas, and the Silicon Valley area of Northern California.
