Looking to Retire to Texas, Son lives in Houston and I lived in Copperas Cove in 1969. Haven't been back since. I'm looking for Small Towns in the Hill Country. I'm a Disabled Vet so I would probably go up to Fort Hood for Docs. Don't mind a ride. So any place that you have enjoyed in the Hill Country would be helpful. I am planning on coming down mid March to look around. I have checked online about Llano.

Thanks for your Help,
Jim

God Bless Your Service!

I used to live in Copperas Cove as well in 2002 (Army) I used to visit Austin on the weekends, so thats where I fell in love with it. Then I left in 2004 to pursue a career as a govt contractor here in Afghanistan where I reside most of the year. However, I returned this year to buy a home this year. I felt I knew the area well. North area was too crowded, West was too expensive, Definetey was not going to live in the City, East just wasnt me, South was nice, in the end I chose Dripping Springs. I am only 29 but I am by for the youngest in my community. I chose Hidden Springs Ranch. Which is mostly retirees. Every lot is an acre, HOA is cheap. It's near a major road (290) It has all the stors we need, including a Home Depot, big HEB coming this summer.

Bee Cave which has all the best buys and walmarts you can ever want is about a 15 minute drive. It's all so very quiet. It's a short drive from all the small quaint towns like San Marcos, Gruene, Wimberly and Driftwood (9.3 miles from the famous Salt Lick) and of course Austin is a short drive north and San Antonio is just south. I love floating the easy traveling guadalupe so that was a big reason to be south.

There are some other towns that are South of Austin. But there is a REALLY nice VA in San Anotonio, not too far from south austin, much shorter the going to Ft. Hood. Brooks Army Medical Center is state of the art! You may consider that Area too.

You might also look into the Kerrville area if you want a bigger town. They have a smaller VA hospital there. Lots of folks retire there so good social things if you want. Really pretty esp Hunt and those areas but those areas are pricer parts of the hill country.

I would second Kerrville. It's a nice town with easy access to I-10 and good medical facilities. It's a really pretty town with the Guadalupe River running through the center and beautiful hills surrounding it.

Two towns that immediately come to mind are Marble Falls and Wimberley. Both are very scenic and about 1 hour outside of Austin, about 2 from Fort Hood. You should definitely take a look at both.

Thanks to all of you. Texans are the Best people in the USA! I had such a good time there 41 years ago. I love Bass Fishing and riding my Harley on back roads. Can only ride here from May to October, then it's Cold and Snowy.

Blessings to ALLL!!!

If you like bass fishing, you need to come to Canyon Lake. Equal distance to Austin and San Antonio, an hour and three to Houston.
