I always love these type of questions because of the bickering that inevitably breaks out.

What's the oldest? Shaman? Hunter/gatherer? Insurance salesman?

I think "being God" would be the world's oldest profession.

What I mean is, where can I take a bike ride without being worried about getting attacked or killed. What areas of Austin are kinda like Detroit?

You mean like the bad parts of Detroit? If they are anything like the bad parts of our nation's capitol that does not exist in Austin. Believe it or not there is some gentrification going on near 12th and Chicon, probably the worst intersection in town. I'd be more concerned about getting hit by a motorist on a cell phone who is only scanning for vehicles Civic-sized or larger than any of the locals loitering about.

Lots of drug related crimes happen around Rundberg & Lamar so I'd stay away from that area.
Don't know how far from downtown you plan to bike.

You didn't know Goody Smythe, then. They say she went hatless many a'Sunday and quite often hitched her skirt and showed a lewd ankle to passerby. Though shunned by the other goodwives of Plymouth colony and repeatedly accused of being a slattern and a witch, she somehow managed to always receive clemency from the village elders.
