I'm in the process of getting a tankless water heater installed. The tax benefits/rebates are pretty decent, knocks about 1k off the price. Energy savings over the next few years make up the rest.

I know of one person who put in a few solar panels with a grid interface and were pleased with the results, but I don't think they were anticipating it would pay for itself at anytime in it's life expectancy.
