We're going to be moving to Austin soon and my husband is keen to find a Chinese Supermarket. Are there any in Austin... or at least somewhere with a good Chinese ingredients selection?

Yes, there are a few. They all seem to be in the northern part of the city, though, so I'd love to find out if anyone knows any down south...

but here are the two I like -

Atxcio,

There used to be a small Asian market at Riverside and Parker. K&S. It was there for close to 20 years (maybe more) but it closed this year. We shopped their often but apparently not often enough. It was the only one I ever knew of south of the river.

There's another one up North named Asia Market in the small center at 183 and Spicewood Springs. It's a lot smaller than MT and Hong Kong Market, but it operates one of the best Chinese restaurants in Austin next door.

A new Chinese market is opening in the old Randalls space at Parmer/I-35. I think it might be the same owner as the one that is near Din Ho. Not sure if they are going to be closing the old location or just opening a second location.

Great info thanks guys!

My husband is so excited to be able to get fresh Chinese ingredients; there's only so much you can get over the internet in the UK. Shame the one in the south closed as it looks like that's where we'll be living initially. If they could have just held out a little longer we would have given them loads of business!

MT is my favorite because of their selection and prices in both fresh and non-perishable food.
The Asia Market one is tiny, their prices are not so great, but I have heard that their food in the little restaurant inside is great (heard it from a native Chinese so there must be some truth to it).

Hey we just moved here from the UK a couple years ago, and being able to get fresh ingredients for cooking chinese food has definitely been one of the perks of living here, especially since I am originally from San Fancisco; doing without that stuff was HARD. MT market is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! It's huge, with so much to choose from.

Anyway, I live south, and drove up to the chinatown mall where MT is located so that my son could see the Lunar New Year Festivities. It took all of 15-20 minutes to get there. It's better to go on the weekend when there is less traffic.
