We have a sale pending now on our home, and hopefully we will be moving to Austin by the end of next month. For the first six months or more we want to rent an apartment while we familiarize ourselves with Austin and decide where we want to buy a house.. We have a 12 year son and our daughter will be home during the summer from college. Any advice? I always hear about the Riata, but don't know how that would be for a family?

It is not my impression that Riata in NW Austin is much a family place. Here is the result of a City-Data search for "riata". It pulls up several discussions about apartments in Austin. //www.city-data.com/forum/searc...rchid=19269947

If you don't know what part of town you want to live in yet, then I would recommend looking at the numerous apartment complexes along South Loop 1 (MoPac) and Brodie Lane near Sunset Valley. These give you excellent access to the rest of the City via Loop 1 and 290/71, unless you are thinking of living in far North Austin. They have good access to recreation, grocery stores, good schools, etc.

Here are a few in my neighborhood that I feel positive about recommending, not sure how many will sign a lease for less then a year:

River Stone Ranch‎
5701 South Mo-Pac Expy
Austin, TX 78749
(512) 899-1600

Grand Reserve At Sunset Valley‎
5800 Brodie Lane
Austin, TX 78745-2557
(512) 892-7001

River Oaks‎
6607 Brodie Lane
Austin, TX 78745-4658
(512) 892-3899

Convict Hill Village‎
5001 Convict Hill Road
Austin, TX 78749-2272
(512) 892-5455

National at Camden Stoneleigh‎
4825 Davis Lane
Austin, TX 78749
(303) 740-2267

Legacy At Western Oak‎
8801 La Cresada Drive
Austin, TX 78749-4501
(512) 288-3400

Beckett Place Townhomes‎
5515 Davis Lane
Austin, TX 78749-3632
(512) 288-9309

Further west on William Cannon:

AMLI at Lantana Ridge‎
6636 W William Cannon Dr
Austin, TX 78735-8529
(512) 891-5500

Anyone looking to rent might want to check this out, although I'm not sure all apartments are listed on it:

Those are all good complexes. The clients I have taken to complexes looking for short term leases end up paying a premium to get a shorter lease. Sometimes it's only $100 more a month.

Thanks so much for all that information. Someone is helping me to look, but I thought I'd check here to see if anyone one else had an opinion. This helps a lot.
