U-Haul Prices as Migration Indicator | Newgeography.com

"When comparing California with Texas, U-Haul says it all. To rent a 26-foot truck oneway from San Francisco to Austin, the charge is $3,236, and yet the one-way charge for that same truck from Austin to San Francisco is just $399. Clearly what is happening is that far more people want to move from San Francisco to Austin than vice versa, so U-Haul has to pay its own employees to drive the empty trucks back from Texas."

Yeah, we've noticed the same thing while we've been pricing moving from Phx to MN to Austin, etc. You can clearly see where the hot spots are by the pricing.

I remember when I lived in LA in the early 90s it was dirt cheap to rent one leaving LA, but super expensive to get there. Then after the riots, it flipped. You couldn't get a U-Haul to Denver or Phoenix or half the other "desirable destinations" at the time for less than $2k.

Yeah, my nephew was living in LA when it was a prime domestic migration destination and it freaked him out. He called me out of the blue one day and said "Dude, right now there are about 10,000 moving vans on their way to Los Angeles and it's like that every day."

Now the city continues to grow in spite of an exodus by American citizens. LA needs its own Ellis Island near San Pedro.
