What are some of the stores that once existed in the Austin area that you miss? I'm skipping grocery stores, as they are often covered/debated in the forum anyway.

Mars music
Tower Records
CD Warehouse

Some that we've gained over the years...
Fry's

A few which are still around...
Guitar Center
Waterloo Records
Cheapo
Cierra

Restaurants...
Amy's
Mangia
Hut's
Kerbey Lane
Magnolia Cafe

I still miss Les Amis. Closest thing we've got these days is Central Market north, and that's not close enough.

I am a fan of Sprouts now, they are definitely a good addition to Austin.

I miss West Lynn Cafe. Zocalo is okay, but doesn't Austin have enough Tex-Mex food already?

But as far as new places go, I like Galaxy Cafe and Mandola's a lot.

I miss Waterloo Brewing Company, on 4th and Guadalupe... was the first brewpub in Texas, as I recall. It was a great place, had nice run.

I also liked Mamma Mia's on Shoal Creek near Steck.

... and I kind of miss the Northcross Mall! Back in the day, it had a nice arcade and good midnight-movie scene.

Also, as others have mentioned, some campus-area staples such as Les Amis, Inner Sanctum Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, and Tower Records (and before that the Tower theatre!)

I miss Yaring's at North Loop and Burnet Road. In fact, I miss that whole shopping center as it originally was, with Beall's, Winn's, Slax, Benold's, the lock and key shop. Give me the original stone construction any day over the stuccoed structure it was turned it into.

I miss the original Hancock Center, with its interior, treed plaza and fountains, Dillard's, Synders Chenard, shoe stores, cafeteria, G.C. Murphy, etc.

I miss Scarborough's downtown.

I'm glad we still have Louis Shanks.

I miss Sid's restaurant on North Lamar and Christie's Seafood downtown. (I also miss the name Town Lake). I miss Monterrey House on Burnet Road. I miss the Luby's cafeteria on North Loop. I miss Margarita's restaurant at North Loop and Burnet Road. I miss Holiday House on Burnet Road.

I miss Lonny's beauty supply in the North Village Shopping Center.

I miss Broz gas station on Burnet Road, with their full service and extra care.

I miss smaller theaters, like the Americana and Fox Twin (and not having to buy a ticket in advance).

There are several new stores I like, but that's all for now.

The landlord raised their rent to $18K/mo. Supposedly they have kept the equipment so they could start up in another locale but that never happened for whatever reason. It's really sad thinking about it since the location is now a parking lot.

I had heard similar from the owner. The rental increase was mostly an incentive to clear the building out, as the place was going to be sold and razed for high-dollar condos... perhaps by the developer of the Plaza Lofts next door. But that plan didn't materialize because of the 2000 dot com bust, I think. So then Fox & Hound rented it (probably at a better rate), and closed... I think another project was then slated for the block, but got put on hold.. might have been the same project that caused the closing of the Gingerman last year (or the year before).
