Back east, band's normally practice in people's basements. In Cali, we used to practice in storage facilities and "rehearsal studios". So, since Austin doesn't have basements and I've not seen any signs of a proliferation of rehearsal studios, it made me wonder where all the musicians practice in the Live Music Capital. I hope the answer isn't "in the garage"...

There are rehearsal studios. I don't know about a "proliferation", but we always used them. The trick is finding a reasonably priced one (the ones around SoCo and SoLa are expensive). Years ago, we used:

MySpace - The Band Co-op - 102 - Male - AUSTIN, Texas - myspace.com/thebandcoop
//www.city-data.com/businesses/...austin-tx.html

It is basically like a warehouse or storage unit, and the area is still pretty low-dollar, so it's probably reasonable to rent there.

But people do use their garages (typically soundproofed). Or an extra bedroom, since most houses have plenty of space...

Thanks for the info. I ask for two reasons:
1) I may want to get back into playing once we're settled and wondered where people jammed which led me to
2) I really don't want to listen to someone having brand practice in the house next door at all hours of the day and night, since I work from home and our son is an extremely light sleeper.

Maybe I'll need to check CCRs for rules regarding noise and such. I've never practiced in a house that didn't have a basement, simply because neighbors seldom appreciate Marshal stacks.

Most musicians in Austin practice at home or at a rehearsal studio like Music Labs.

So, is it common to hear music blaring all over a neighborhood morning, noon and night?

No. A friend of ours in Pflugerville has some musicians near him that practice at night, but not past 8 or 8:30. Probably the more established bands practice in rehearsal spaces.

My daughter is looking for a place to store her drum set and be able to practice there too. Right now she isn't with a band, just wants a place to practice that has climate control also. Right now we are in an apartment, so it's not possible to practice at home. She is having a difficult time finding a place that will let her practice there too.
