I went to Shoal Creek on Sunday evening. They were out of the crawfish boil. That was depressing--I've had their crawfish before and they're usually large and tasty. The seasoning is a bit weak, but nothing to really complain about.

I tried the cajun gumbo instead. The meat in the gumbo was delicious, but the roux was pretty bland, which was disappointing. They had cajun chicken wings there which were also pretty good but were very small and overpriced (probably half the size of a WingZone or Pluckers wing).

This won't be helpful to the OP since its not in Austin but my favorite Cajun place is Razzoo's in RR. I know, I know. I usually hate chains and yes I have eaten at numerous authentic cajun restaurants accross LA.

Razzoo's always has good music playing and their fried alligator is the best I have ever had as are their fried pickles. I can't speak to other menu items as the aforementioned are so good its what I order everytime.

Razzoo's in Round Rock? I haven't been there (and I thought I knew them all!). Where is it located? I'll have to make a point of going by for lunch.

It's located next to Mighty Fine in the IKEA parking lot.

Ah. That explains why I haven't run across it. Thanks! There's a wealth of non-chain cajun/creole restaurants in Austin, but I'll give it a try, nonetheless.

HAHA I agree that description does not sound appealing, but I'm telling you, if you like alligator, fried pickles, and recorded cajun music, its the place to go.

We've been there once and liked it, for chain food. Someone just opened a Cajun place in Hutto but I haven't tried it. It's called Cajun Best and when I googled it, all I came up with were products with this name. It's not a store though, it's a small cafe.

Well, love roses, go by and try it out and let me know how it is! I just discovered a truly awesome pizzeria out here, five minutes from the ranch. It's called Gepetto's Pizzeria, it's technically in Salado but closer to Prairie Dell, and it may just be the best pizza I've ever had. No more driving into Austin for pizza! Not that that has anything to do with Cajun food, but I thought I'd let you know about it since you've turned me on to some other eateries in past.
