...how would you spend it?

I live in Des Moines, Iowa... considering a relocation. My girlfriend and I will be in Austin from Wed April 21st to Sun April 25th and would like suggestions on how to really feel the city out in such a short amount of time.

We both love the outdoors and live music... so I know we won't have to search too hard for either but would like suggestions on the best places.

Our only plans thus far:

I have some distant family members who own the restaurant Botticelli's on South Congress

Also going to check out Hill Country Bible Church, as my girlfriend's family friend is a pastor there.

Thank YOU

Just in time for Eeyores (Apr 24)! That would be a fun thing to check out, my #1 recommendation. Music and the outdoors. Eeyores Birthday Party

Also Art Week Austin - art alliance austin - bringing the fine arts to austin and central texas

And a good compilation of other suggestions on this thread -

Plesae tell your cousins that my wife and I had dinner at Botticelli's for the first time last night and LOVED IT!!!!! She had the chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto, and I had the pork saltimbocca. Both were just perfect.

Since you'll be on South Congress anyway, I recommend that you take a couple of hours and just check out the cool stores, restaurants, and food trailers there.

1) Hike and explore the Barton Creek Green Belt 2) take a swim in Barton Springs pool 3) canoe on Lake Austin 4) Eat at various restaurants on Barton Springs Rd., South Congress, and all over downtown 5) bar hop in the warehouse district and 6th street 6) Take a drive in the hill country southwest of Austin maybe to Fredricksburg. There are several wineries around there you can tour. 7) Drive out to Lake Travis and have a sunset dinner at the Oasis. There are tons of things to do, I'm sure others will chime in and there have been several threads recently where people have made some great recommendations.

These all sound like WONDERFUL things! I'm even more excited, thanks!

I will definitely give the kudos to the cousins I've never been there, but really looking forward to the food.

Art week, hiking, and Eeyore's bday all look killer!!

Be sure to check out the Continental Club. Great for live music. Take a nice walk through that area. You will be happy you did. Also, try to do a loop around "ladybird lake". It's beautiful this time of year. And check out Barton Springs and that whole park area.

Everyone tells me that I missed out on South Congress in South Austin. The only place I went to near that area was Hill Country Galleria. And it was really cool IMHO. See if you can go to the state parks.

City of Austin things to do for tourists:

1. Go to the Texas State Capitol and the University of Texas campus - the heart of the state and the city. Eat some barbecue at Ruby's, Stubbs, or the Iron Works; these places are touristy, but you're a tourist.

2. Tour the downtown area around Town Lake. Later, see the bats fly out from under Lamar Bridge at Town Lake, near dusk. After, stay in downtown and tour the 6th Street area and the Warehouse District - lots of live music and plenty of places to eat.

3. Do what we do, eat breakfast at any of the Mexican food eateries found along South Congress, South First, or along the stretch of Barton Springs Road that leads to Zilker Park. Then take a swim in Barton Springs Pool, you'll know why when you see the beauty of it all.

4. Drive through West Austin. Go to the top of Mount Bonnell during daylight hours, take a camera. You'll see a panorama of the Austin area and Lake Austin. Eat a Southern Style lunch at either the Waterloo Ice House, The Frisco, or Threadgill's on North Lamar Blvd.

5. Have a nice dinner at the Driskill Grill, Jeffery's, Aquarelle, Vespaio's, or one of the steak places. Then go dancing at any club in the downtown area... even if you can't dance!

Couple of things...

Don't do it!! Avoid any recommendations by artsyguy, don't get scammed! The HC Galleria is simply a half-empty outdoor mall that only recently opened in Bee Caves. Boring! And the state parks, while nice camping for the local residents who want to get away, are NOT worth seeing for a tourist. The city/county parks are the truly iconic ones! Barton Creek, Zilker, Barton Springs Pool, Ladybird Lake, Bull Creek, Pease, Hippy Hollow, Hamilton Pool, etc. These are the parks any other city in Texas would kill to have.

Danbo's suggestions are great, but let me just point out:

* Town Lake = Ladybird Lake now (it was renamed in 2008)
* Don't go to Vespaio if your family owns Botticelli's

Last edited by atxcio; 04-03-2010 at 12:39 AM.. Reason: how could I forget Zilker???
