New Kerbey Lane Cafe coming to …

By Matthew Odam | Thursday, April 1, 2010, 12:33 PM

Beloved Austin home of round-the-clock eats, Kerbey Lane Cafe announced yesterday on their Twitter that they will be opening a fifth location in Southwest Austin. They said that more details are to come, but I have been told by a Kerbey Lane insider that the restaurant will occupy the building that once housed Dimassi’s Mediterranean Buffet at 4301 W. William Cannon Drive. My source tells me that management hopes the restaurant will be opened by August at the latest.

What do you guys think is next big area for restaurant growth? The east side? Round Rock? And would Kerbey Lane (or Magnolia Cafe) be the same if they left Austin proper?

That's a terrific location for a Kirby Ln., across from a P-Terry's. I ate at that Mediterranean place once for lunch and knew it's days were numbered immediately. It was terrible. The food was gross.

Only thing is, I image KL always being in old houses or older established places. That's a new, modern strip center (also where SW Costco is located) so I hope they can do something architecturally with the building to make it less sterile looking and give it more of an older Austin look and feel.

Not sure why that matters. Maybe a psychologist could explain. But the breakfast joints like Magnolia and Kirby also get their appeal from the look and feel of the place and the staff. If I go into the new place and it's a strip-center feel and the waiter has Dockers and no metal bolted in his/her face, it just ain't gonna feel like KL. Might as well hit iHop in Westlake.

BTW - tried to meet my wife and daughter for lunch at KL on S. Lamar Friday. 1+ hour wait. We skipped it and ended up at Jim's in Oak Hill of all places. Jim's is OK, but it ain't Kirby Ln.

Steve

I agree, Steve. I'm afraid Kirbey Lane has never been the same since they opened their second store. I'll always cherish the original location, and the food that was served there. Even the one on South Lamar, which was walking distance from my house when we lived down there, didn't feel like Kerbey Lane (any more than a "margarita" with strawberries or something in it should be called a margarita). Okay enough restaurant in a pinch (and local, so I shouldn't be saying this), but not the Kerbey Lane that the original was when it started.

I Love Kerby Lane. Their Migas with queso are super yummy. I can't wait.

Oh, and Kerbey Lane (the original) didn't get its reputation from being a "breakfast place". It was a very nice place to go out for dinner when we used to go there when they first opened. Sort of a "dress up a little bit" place.

This will be good for SW Austin. They need an established business in that location. The two businesses before, DiMassi and Village Inn, went belly up in a year. I just hope it can survive. It's not easy to navigate into Arbor Walk shopping park. Traffic can be difficult coming out at the one main light on William Cannon. Need to put in an entrance on Brushy Creek side.

I was caught in the Brodie/Wiliam Cannon interchange this weekend for what seemed like an hour.
