I read about something called a "liquor ID" on another site that I can use instead of a passport to get into bars. I've tried Googling it but it keeps giving me info on other States and/or liquor licences (for bar owners.)

Does anyone know how/where I can apply for a liquor ID?

just be prepared to show either 21 growth rings or a drivers license whichever is easier on you

Hehe, I wish the growth rings were an option!
The problem is my eyesight isn't good enough to drive so I can't have one. I'm 30 but I know they can still turn you away if you don't have ID.

That just leaves me with my passport, which I really don't want to have to carry about with me all the time. It was a pest to constantly dig it out of my bag on holidays to the US, but now I'm moving there I'd really like something small I can keep in my wallet. This elusive "liquor ID" sounds perfect, I just don't know where to get one.

I think you mean the Texas Identification Card. It's issued by the DPS, the same people who do drivers licenses, only it's just the ID part and not the license. You can find more info here:

Texas Department of Public Safety - Driver License or ID requirements

What you're referring to is actually a UNICARD, which must still be used in conjunction with a picture ID.

I think that the only proof of age that a bar is technically required to accept is a Tx Drivers License or a Texas ID card. I was turned away some years ago with a U.S. Passport.....

Any current state, or government, issued picture ID is perfectly acceptable, otherwise we'd have heard lots of tourists' complaints about this already. Maybe they just didn't like you TW.

The UNICARD is for "dry" counties in Texas, mostly places like Dallas, where you had to be part of a "club" to buy drinks at a restaurant/bar. I think most of Dallas has gone away from that requirement by now, but it used to be a big deal. Think it might have been a holdover from the blue laws, which is another discussion altogether.

It's never been necessary to have a UNICARD or club membership in Austin, San Antonio, or Houston AFAIK. The Texas ID is all the OP needs to get in clubs/bars or drink at restaurants.

you'd think, huh? But apparently, there was a bunch of people making up fake out of state DLs, and it is hard for a bartender/doorman to know what a DL from Wyoming or wherever looks like, so they could (and often did) refuse oos DLs.

As for the passport, not sure the doorman knew a passport from a passbook, but eh.....
