Where I live in Branson, Missouri, one of our local "trendy" hotels is holding a Fall Vintner's Dinner with an Australia theme.

On the menu is a soup made from Hermit Crabs.

No. Really.

Now I am wondering, is this actually a food that Aussies eat? Do you actually eat hermit crabs in Australia? really. Truly.

Just wondering.

Well, no. Not to my knowledge anyway! I've never seen a hermit crab dish offered in any restaurants (and I eat out a lot) and I've never seen any offered for sale in fish shops. While I suppose there may be some people who eat them, I doubt hermit crab soup would ever appear on a top 20 (or even top 50) list of popular Australian meals. Maybe your local hotel is using them in place of blue swimmer crabs or mud crabs... both of which are very popular in Australia.

Or any crab soup for that matter. If its in the usual chowder style then not Australian at all.

Hopefully its not like that awful Outback Steakhouse. Sounds more like an Australian wine night rather than Australian food.

One thing about Australian v American seafood is that there a lot of differences as seafood is quite regional. For instance, lobsters are totally different and try to get an American to eat a Moreton Bay Bug.

Thanks for the responses, mates. They are also serving Kangaroo Tartar as well. I venture to say that you wont' see that on many Aussie menus either.

Actually... LOL... Kangaroo Tartare isn't quite as off the wall as hermit crab soup. Kangaroo meat is gaining popularity in Australia as it's a very lean meat, and as meats go, is very healthy. More and more restaurants are putting it on their menus, and you can buy it in almost any supermarket these days.

Yeah, I'd go for that Roo Tartar any day. Love kangaroo meat! But I'm probably not in the majority, even in my own country. Many people are squeamish about eating "Skippy". That was a tv show back years ago - 60's? about a pet kangaroo and a young boy. Kinda like an Aussie version of Lassie.

As for hermit crabs ... I've not heard about them in Oz, in or out of soup. I don't think we really have a "national" soup, or any sort of soup that's typically Australian. Soup in Australian restaurants is outrageously expensive, as much as a meal in the US. I've never ordered soup in Oz.

I wouldn't mind the "roo" part, it's the "tartar" that bothers me. I love my meat very well done!

Actually, I had the chance to sample some kangaroo a few years ago, I liked it very much. It was a bit chewy in spots, however. This was probably due to not being cooked properly. Anyway, you have quite a plentiful supply, so you shouldn't go hungry any time soon! LOL

No way I'd be eating Roo Tartare unless it was farmed roo - wild roos have too many parasites.
