I've talked to a few people here who've never heard of them.
I see these little strainers over the kitchen sink drain that catch food, but they also keep the sink dirty.
Apparently they are used for keeping the sink's plumbing from getting clogged.
A bit gross imho, to have to scoop the debris out yourself.

I'm used to seeing them in nearly every kitchen:

Certainly do exist in Australia as have one. Wasn't aware of what they were called though.

Yes they definitely exist - I've had them in a number of houses. We usually call 'em InSinkErators! Lots of Aussie sites come up on google.

We have one Coldy!

Have never heard the term Garburator before however, I just call it a garbage or waste disposal unit.

Like I told Coldy I've never heard of such a thing. Maybe I don't take a look at most people's sinks, but it sounds really fancy.

We don't have one and I don't know anyone amongst my friends who does. They don't seem to be as common as in Canada & the US. We looked into getting one when we redid our kitchen but found them to be too expensive. Three times the price of what we had been used to. I compost mainly anyway.

Same here. We just call them garbage disposals here.

My sink only has a trap in it. It's annoying to drain the sink without letting the debris drain into the pipe but, I always stick my hand into the sink and lift the trap a little bit to drain and let the debris collect on it and then take it over to my garbage can and empty it out there. If that grosses you out, just buy a box of latex (or nitril if you're allergic to latex) gloves

I suppose it isn't horribly gross to do that, just I've never heard of anyone needing to do it.

We had one years ago, called a sinkerater, now we save all the food waste for the compost heap.
