As for major cities, I've been to LA, SD, LV, Austin, Houston, NOLA, Memphis, Nashville, DC, the burbs of Philly, NYC and Boston so it's not like I haven't experienced city life in America!
Well then what can I say. We're just no match for the fabulous cities of Australia.

I'm not sure anyone could say the downtown areas of Nashville and Austin are boring. A city of comparable size in Oz would be dead after 8pm. Those towns are pumping.

Nashville and Austin are especially lively for their sizes, but they certainly have alot of dead areas in the CBD. Have you been to Adelaide lately? It's pretty lively on weekends in the CBD, certainly didn't feel 'dead' in comparison to Nashville and far more inhabited than Memphis outside Beale did. Memphis outside Beale feels deserted.

Memphis' CBD outside of Beale is deserted on evenings and weekends. But if you're not there on business, which most wouldn't be in the evening or on a weekend, why would you go there?

Any city will have dead areas in the CBD. Who wants to hang around office blocks after work or on weekends?
Memphis was for me a let down. Fairly boring city, with not much going on. Completely different to what I expected.
How about Adelaide on a Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday night?

I find most Australian cities have more character, and even in Adelaide the downtown is teeming with people on any given day. In the middle of the day Memphis' main mall had as many people as Rundle mall has at midnight. Of course maybe that's not a good representation of all cities, but it is of a large majority of them.
I am curious, who nominated Memphis as a vacation destination for yourself? The majority of Americans would never recommend Memphis to an outsider. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend Memphis to anyone from America.
The nine cities that you MUST see while in America are Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington DC. I believe you really missed out if you did not explore the cities mentioned above.
Let everyone on the forum know about your trip in review and the cities you visited when the trip is completed.
