Before I visited Europe, always thought Melbourne somewhat lorded it over Sydney but this is not the case now. Melbourne, in no way, has any similar feelings to Europe. Talk about kidding oneself too long LOL.

Interesting. I remember in Spain I met a woman who happened to be from Melbourne at a party. I hadn't met a Melbournite before and like most Sydneysiders, never gave the place a second thought. When she found out I was from Sydney, she proceeded to tell the whole group of Brits and Americans about how Melbourne's coffee is so much better than Sydney, how it is the sporting capital, praise it's beautful architecture, the bar scene, and how people from Sydney were concerned with things that don't matter such as appearance, partying ect.

And I was like, "What is this?"

Then an Irish guy said he'd been to Oz and liked Sydney's beaches better...well, she got angry.

There are some like that. I'm not from either, but I've been to both at least 5-6 times each. Sydney beats Melbourne in many areas, it's ridiculous to think Melbourne beats Sydney in everything. I'll just say in general I prefer Melbourne and leave it at that, but superiority is subjective. There are many people who love both cities for different reasons, I love Sydney's beauty, you just don't find that in Melbourne. Melbourne can never match Sydney's northern beaches, or the view from the Gap, or the Blue Mountains.

Proof that small and closed minds are still abundant.

As an outsider, I've always been more attracted to Melbourne than Sydney, but I think I'd enjoy Sydney's beach culture.

Dean, Australia is a very big country, with vast distances between the capital cities.
I know plenty of people from NSW that have never been out of the state, or if they have - only Canberra (doesn't really count - usually done in the final year of Primary School as part of their education), or only to the Gold Coast just across the border.
Likewise, I am sure there are many Melburnians that have never been to Sydney.

Having lived in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane for extensive periods of time (grew up in Sydney, spent 4 years Melbourne, 2 years Brisbane), the city I liked most was Brisbane.

At present, I live nowhere near any city

If you live way out in the 'burbs, with a menial job and sheltered life, it would be pretty easy to never meet one. Or if so, once in a blue moon.
Interstate migration is not that high.
