I've come across a 1966 A$0.20 piece. If it were a US coin, whose grading standards I know, it would grade Fine (worn but not heavily, with some fine detail and no outright damage beyond wear). It is the Canberra mint variety with the flat 2 base. I've been searching Australian coin values online for hours, and the information is thinner for decimal era coins such as this one. In uncirculated condition, the guides peg it at A$45.00, but mine is obviously not near that condition or value. The guides have hyphens for the values of worn coins, which usually means it's worth face or melt, whichever is higher (in this case, definitely face).

While it's possible that a $45 mint state non-precious metal coin is worth only face in circulated condition--especially an issue that spent a lot of time in people's pockets, and with high mintage--it's not too common. Any Australian numismatists that can help with an estimate of worth?

I imagine it's worth about what it says it's worth on the coin.

Whether it's worth a decent amount or not depends on whether it's a 'Wavy Line' 20 cent piece or not. I believe however, that the Wavy Lines were minted in London (see this eBay listing for photos depicting the wavy bottom line of the '2' in 20).

With that said though, a regular, Canberra Mint 20 cent piece from 1966 isn't worth much at all. They're listed on eBay for as low as $5 or a lot of Fifty 1966 20 Cent pieces for $19.95. Catalog value for a London mint, as you suspected however is $45 in uncirculated VF condition.

Hope that helps! Overall, I'm sorry but it doesn't seem as if your coin is super rare or valuable.

Good luck!

Since it's not the wavy 2 base, nor is it uncirculated, I was pretty sure it wasn't a premium coin. So far opinion is about divided between "It's worth A$0.20, like it says on the coin" and "They are auctioning for A$3ish." Either way, it's clear that it's not enough of a premium item to spend too much time on, and even if I split the difference when valuing it, I won't be off more than a buck or so. Much appreciate the input.
