I'm planning to take a trip to New Zealand (South Island) from mid-October until the end of November. I have a pretty good idea what I can expect the weather and temperature to be like from a quick search, but the main purpose of my trip is hiking, trekking, and photography. I know starting in November is the tourist season. I have two questions:
1) For the time frame I'll be in New Zealand, will the scenery be nice? Basically, will there be leaves on the trees, grass, etc.? I know there are probably nicer times to go to NZ but this is the most convenient for me. As long as it's not desolate (I'm used to winters in the Northeast U.S.), that's fine with me
2) I'm planning to do this trip solo, so I'm just wondering about how crowded some of the more popular trails and parks get. I'd be willing to shift my trip a couple of weeks earlier if it means avoiding throngs of tourists.
Well November is a good time of year to visit, what exactly are you wanting to know?
What the weather's like, since I'll be renting a motorcycle; whether there are any major events to attend (or avoid); whether I absolutely have to pre-book accommodation, that sort of thing. Am I correct in thinking that the main tourist season doesn't really kick off until December?
Bumping thread, because I've planned a trip to the South Island for the first two weeks of November.
That's probably a good time of year to go before it gets too busy and prices start to rise. If you plan to go well before the NZ schools break up you should be sweet.
You can get some weather stats here but there is a lot of regional variation due to the latitudes the SI spans and the presence of the Southern Alps.

Accomodation should be ok generally not having to pre-plan much with the exception of Christchurch, with many of the larger hotels in the inner city gone, accomodation can be tight, definitely make a few forward inquires there.
Do Nelson, Kiakora all lovely spots, Hanmer Springs (stay a Friday/Sat night and do the pubs), Queenstown of course, West Coast and Glaciers.
