I'm sure most Australians would like some acknowledgment, so yes, it is. But I don't have a problem with acknowledging it, just where the acknowledgment is being done. If you think about it, Mabo and Wik both accomplished the same goal of acknowledging at law that there was someone here before colonisation. I think if more people understood the Constitution they'd appreciate why it's kind of out of step with the "vibe of the thing" to change it in this way.

Dennis Denuto would agree too. So you really don't have a leg to stand on.

What about Europeans colonizing the Americas? People rarely make a big deal about that. But when it comes to Brits taking Australia it suddenly becomes controversial?

I'm all for Aboriginals rights (we should always aid the ones in poverty), but this country would've been nomadic if nobody came and took over it. Australia is one of the best countries in the world. It would've been a waste of land if they left it with people still running around carrying spears and wearing animal-clothing in the 18th-19th century.

If Europeans never came here I wonder how modern Australia would be like? Maybe a country like Papua New Guinea - full of poverty, famine, violence and crime? I don't know...

So really, taking a land does have huge advantages. Again, look at how rich and prosperous we are. So many immigrants coming here to have a better life. If a colonized Australia didn't exist, then the many of us would be having terrible lives in god knows what country.

Well these issues are usually about perspective.

In your opinion Aus is one of the best places in the world to live, when is the last time you asked a full blooded Aborigine?, do they generally feel like you do?

Is people carrying a spear REALLY less valuable than people driving a car?, how does that work?. Is perhaps living sustainably more sensible than what we have now?

Australia is not alone tackling these issues but it is a little behind in a few areas in my subjective opinion.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people managed to live here successfully for around 60,000 years. Who are we to say our way of life is any better than theirs?

I think they've been subjected to unimaginable horrors since Europeans invaded this country, herded them together like animals and then tried to breed them out of existence which included snatching their children and tearing language groups apart. We owe them, big time.

+1 omg could this be a sign of the end of the world!, but good post!

Aus is hardly alone facing these issues, Europeans "colonised" a number of countries. Aus is a little behind a few others, but in the grand scheme of things is getting there.

Why do you think many aborigines wouldn't want that?
