A bit of both?

The lyrics aren't that bad and do tell the story about return servicemen... But I think the bogans missed the point of the song.

I think it's a brilliant song noted for it's " last drinks" sentiment.

The lyrics always seemed to me to be about the acquisition of a mail order bride which is exactly what Jimmy Barnes did do.

Like I said, these lyrics are often misinterpreted.

So that is how he got a visa to go to France when he owed all that money to the ATO!

I am a bit biased though... Before I made guitars, I used to play guitar in bands. Jimmy's roadie (the rodent) stole a class A tube amp from me at a gig, to top it off... on the way out, a drunken punter in a collingwood jersey came up to say g'day and all that come out was vb and whatever he had for lunch.

I know nothing about this and have never heard the song, so I asked Dr Google. I think you were probably nearer the mark with "insightful social comment about late 1970s Australia."
