Here is what I want to know. Has there been any report about how and when the 2 dead hostages died? Were they already dead when the police went in or did they get killed in crossfire after the police went in?
Just before the armed police stormed the building there was at least one shot from inside and some people ran out. Then all hell broke loose.
From what I've read this morning it appears the gunman may have fell asleep. In any event, some hostages escaped. The manager, Tori Johnson tried to wrestle the gun off him and got shot in the process. IMO he was a hero and his story deserves to be told. The gunman also threatened to shoot people in retaliation for the escapes. One of the police officers had a shotgun wound to his face, which suggests the offender was already actively discharging his weapon when they entered.
I'm not sure how Katrina Dawson died, but police brought out a woman soon seconds after the firefight and she was given CPR on the road. It was harrowing to watch.
Death, vengeance and destruction is never the answer. I'm glad we don't have the death penalty here in Australia. We owe it to the memories of Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson not to let a lone lunatic change the way of life we all hold so dearly.
Are you OK with him being killed by the Police?
Or if he was in Syria it would be OK to kill by Soldier or Drone?
What if he set off a Car Bomb that killed 30 kids on a bus?
But it's not OK to kill by the state (which is all the above).
Don't you owe it to Katrina or Tori to prevent him from killing again in the future (even in prison).
I'm glad most Australians are able to distinguish this. Combined with the #illridewithyou on twitter, I think we have responded well to an unprecedented event here
