I've got a job offer at the University of Melbourne and will move there in the next few months with my wife and 15-month son. I'm finding a place for the family and would like to hear your suggestions to figure it out. Preferably, we like a neighborhood quiet, kid-friendly. While price understandably varies within and between suburbs, we are looking for options not to exceed $1,000/mo. As well, we are not likely to buy a car soon and want the place to be convenient for public transportation. The city seems to have well developed public transportation system, but I don't know if it's gonna be OK without a car there especially for the baby.

Thanks

1000 per month is going to be hard.

You can find okay-ish 1 bed room flats for 250p/w around yarrraville/kingsville/footscray
but yeah slim pickings

yarraville and footscray have great transport.

Suburbs along the Craigieburn line (especially between Ascot Vale and Essendon) may also be worth looking at. They are not far from Parkville. When I lived in Melbourne (for 4 years in the 90s), most of the time, I lived in that region - I liked it very much.

I agree with David that there isn't much available for $250 or less. If you are able to afford $1200 a month, you may have more luck:

Real Estate & Property For Rent*with 2 bedrooms*between $50 and $300*in Ascot Vale, VIC 3032 (Page 1) - realestate.com.au

A lot of the time that I lived in the above region, I lived in Brunswick - one could walk to or ride to the uni from there, I used to do it on weekends (it is a long walk, I will admit). Also if one lives near the Upfield line, that service goes through Royal Park:

Thanks for the hints so far. I think that we will be able to relax the original estimate of rent limit. So feel free to suggest alternatives as it does look like that rental options are proportionate with an expansion of margin.

Congratulations on your job offer, I took a look around the campus a couple of years ago. It's an interesting site. There's lots of student-type accommodation within walking distance of the campus, it may be a good idea to try something short term and local, until you find your feet.
