For my Australian holiday from the USA I will be staying in Melbourne during the first week of August. Right now I have five properties (yes, five - thank booking.com with its no-obligation-to-pay-until-you-arrive plus free cancellation policies) booked right now.
One in Collingwood, one at St. Kilda Junction, one in St. Kilda, and two in the CBD.
I'm looking to stay in an area central to most attractions, plus be in close proximity to bars (especially gay bars), restaurants and cafes, and where tour and airport shuttles are willing to pick up.
The property at St. Kilda Junction looks to be the best bet in terms of value, but it seems to be in furthest proximity to everything. The Collingwood property is the same price, has the convenience factor, but lacks the free breakfast and Wifi of the St. Kilda Junction property. The other properties cost about double, but still within my budget.
St. kilda is my favourite area ... So being biased ...I'd go there... You could catch a short tram ride to commercial road, /chapel street which has some gay bars.
Collingwood is ok, but if I were staying that side of the city I'd prefer Fitzroy.
st kilda / Collingwood / Fitzroy have vibrant bar/restaurant scenes....you will have a good time in any of those areas

One place is on Little Bourke Street next to the Bourke Street Mall and the other is by Southern Cross Station towards the Yarra. The Collingwood property seems to be on the borderline between Collingwood and Fitzroy.

Southern cross one, I wouldnt stay there. There isn't that much on that side of the city
Bourke St is central... But I'd still go for Collingwood / st kilda
