Founded by a Canadian? Sort of ironically, Burger King (the American owner of Hungry Jack's) just recently bought Tim Hortons, a very popular Canadian coffee/donut shop chain, which had for the last 20 years been owned by the American company Wendy's (a competitor of Burger King) which just HAPPENS to share a name with the Aussie ice cream chain Wendy's.

Yes. I believe Jack Cowin still owns Hungry Jacks though.
I recall there only being the 1 Hungry Jacks as a youngster - was in George Street in Sydney - near the movie precinct.
Then it established a chain.
As I work in the meat industry I was aware that HJ was Burger King in the US, as a lot of product is exported there. (including a burgeoning certified "Angus" market)
HJ was the original franchisee for BK in Australia. It started off in WA and made a single foray into Sydney. Then BK decided to try and take over franchising in Australia and started rolling out BK stores on the East Coast, while trying to terminate Cowin's franchise agreement with certain allegations. After a protracted court case, BK sold it's franchise rights to a NZ company which reached an agreement with Cowin to make HJ the master franchisee in Australia. Accordingly, all BK stores were rebranded as HJ. The only menu item that is on the HJ menu which is retains the BK name is the Whopper.
Yeah but the Milky Way in Australia actually tastes good, 3 Musketeers is okay and the American Milky Way is awful.
Wait a minute... so the name used IS Burger King in New Zealand? That seems a bit odd but I guess makes sense if Hungry Jack's just isn't interested in the smaller NZ slice of the pie.

Every so often I buy one because I want a mars bar. It's not a mars bar. Have you ever tried a European Milky way? So disgusting, it's vanilla, not chocolate.

HJ is just the Australian master franchisee. A NZ company is the master franchisee for the rest of the South Pacific so it's BK in NZ and other South Pacific countries.

Ah in Europe to get the traditional Milky Way that we grew up with you have to get a Flyte bar. I still like a Curly Wurly the best or a Picnic which is nigh impossible to get these days. It can't be any more disgusting than a Hershey Bar.
