What is an analogous city in the US to Melbourne as it pertains to its place in the global cities? I have never been to Australia but view Sydney as the NYC of the country (rightly or wrongly) even though I don't view it on that same scale of relative importance to the whole world but what about Melbourne?

San Fran is somewhat similar.

Melbourne is going to overtake Sydney soon as Australis premier city, so the comparison to NY might change down the line.

I suspect the meaning being once Melbourne overtakes Sydney in population growth its likely influence and importance will grow.
After all Melbourne with cleverly targeted PR has leapt ahead significantly over thirty years, when it was considered something of a drab sort of place.

Melbourne was the original capital city of Australia.

Unlikely though Melbourne will repeat past glories when in the 1880's it was allegedly the richest city in the world. This was due to gold.
With population 'crush' all the go, one may well wonder how far Melbourne will slip down the desirability stakes?

I believe it was equally as wealthy as Buenos Aires at the time.

I know certain posters here have a fairly negative opinion of Australia. But having been to Argentina, I think we have fared an awful lot better than they. We actually sat in a cafe in BA and commented how similar some things were to Melbourne. But so many things there are now a lot worse, unfortunately for them.
