Hopefully the rest of the world will have the balls to hold them to account. But any trade deterioration will have a massive impact on our economy of course.
Australia will not start a trade war with China. It would be too painful with the most severe of consequences. It may well be caught up in the turbulence of a USA/China trade fall out though, allowing itself another LBJ moment at great cost to itself.
Shooting oneself in the foot comes to mind with the hope the bullet will pass cleanly through the toes without any damage.
Just how do you suggest Australia could accomplish that? At best a very long term project. Australia is exceptionally tied to China's fortune. A down turn in that country would greatly impact Australian well being. To take the knife oneself and severe an artery would prove more suicidal than sensical.
Australia has been warned over time with regards to its over dependency on China. No effort to rectify this sorry situation was ever attempted. What did happen was ever more of Australia's 'shining lights' going over to the 'China Camp' and advocating on behalf of the Middle (Celestial) Kingdom.
Aussies love their creature comforts to much to rely on basics. It would be character building, probably nation building as well to return to a more basic way of live though . Now to convince your average Bruce of that being fact. A hard sell I'd say.
I do agree that Australia needs to learn resilience and self-reliance, away from China. It's never a good thing to rely too heavily on another country, especially one as politically and socially questionable as China, that likes to slap punitive and drastic measures on countries like Australia as a kid of vengeance. China's had a terrible track record over the last few years, in fact they're up to their ears in hot water, it would be preferable if Australia could do without it, or at least find the innovations and means to do so.
China going to keep buying our iron ore. Try as they might to replace it with Brazilian ore nothing beats Pilbara ore. The barley and beef stuff is all a bit stupid, shows what a whinging baby the CCP is.
