Mine was Wellington. It was so beautiful.. but wet! I thought Auckland was a copycat of Sydney but I enjoyed exploring the city. I spent a night in Christchurch and stayed in my hotel the whole night. However, people were so lovely. I had a random family that gave me a lift to the Airport.

Christchurch. I was there pre-earthquake, and the cathedral was beautiful.

Wellington would have to be second. Nice city.

I lived in Christchurch for 8 years but it would have to be number 2 after Wellington. Wellington which I've been to a dozen times is stunning on a beautiful day, it's not too busy and is so easy to get around. There is so much to do and The vibe of the city makes you feel so welcome. Everyone is pretty laid back and happy

I got to spend a lot of time in Christchurch, for work, both pre and post earthquake. But there are so many cities and towns that are very nice...Akaroa on the Banks penninsula, Kaikoura for whale watching, rode the train to Greymouth, Hanmer Springs for a soak in a mineral pool, Queenstown with a side trip to Milford Sound...they're all so beautiful, it's hard to pick a favorite!
I never got to explore the North Island (except the airport at Auckland), and was planning a trip there, but coronavirus put a stop to that. Hopefully some day I'll be able to...

Like you i choose Wellington. What a nice city. However i was luckier. I was told it could be very windy and possibly rainy but for the week i was there in summer it was sunny, dry, and warm.

If I count Napier/Hastings as one city and rank the seven major cities of New Zealand, I would get this:

1. Dunedin
2. Tauranga
3. Napier/Hastings
4. Hamilton
5. Wellington
6. Auckland
7. Christchurch

Auckland. Auckland has wonderful beaches and two lovely harbours, it is a good size city with a mild year round climate.
