Fox news and the speed channel are very busy trying to make a "safety hero" of Dale Earnhardt. Yesterday and today they have repeatedly shown a show called "The Day" which makes some kind of really ethical, safety minded racer of Dale Earnhardt Senior. Nothing could be further from the truth. Richard Childress actually said that during the last few laps before Earnhardt was killed in the last lap crash that he had said, "Richard, They are going to have to do something for the safety of these cars or they're going to get somebody killed."
This coming from a driver who never, not once wore a full face mask but instead wore an open face with either sunglasses or goggles. Also his friends all knew that during the last few laps of an especially tiring race he would loosen his lap belt for comfort.
Amazing that a guy who broke all of the ethical rules and half of the written ones is going to turn out to be the Christ of stock car racing.

With the way that Dale Sr drove he is lucky he didnt cause the death of someone. He had no problem wrecking someone else.
That's my point exactly. He broke every code of ethics associated with the sport. I have a killer post race interview from the 1989 late race at N. Wilkesboro. He and Rudd had been racing hard and on the next to the last turn they got together and both wrecked. Geoff Bodine won the race and you should have heard the mixture of foul language Dale used live...on the air.
Between the late 1970's and mid 90's my wife and I were at Daytona Beach seventeen consecutive years during speed weeks. Over half those times we went on to the FL Keys after the big race and charter boat fished between the Keys and the Dry Tortugas. Pretty good duty all things considered.

To the bird who called me a redneck....what do you play...girl's lacrosse?
Hey, girls lacrosse is nasty. He's probably knitting sweaters.

He didnt get his nickname because he drove like Mark the kid martin.
I am glad that they increased the safety measures do to his death but it is hypocritical of him to say that with the way he drove.

I think it all relates to the whole celebrity worship thing.
Look how many people idolize people convicted of drug crimes, animal torture, wife beating and the like.
