The trend appears to divide the $15-$20 million tab amongst several primary sponsors therefore softening the blow somewhat. It can make for more effective advertising if your demographic is in concentrated areas.
The split sponsorship has been around since I've been watching casually in 1998 (and I am not even talking about the special paint schemes for say Charlotte races or the Firecracker 400. However I will say in the mid 2000's, it got much more prevalent.

Indeed. It seems fewer want to or have the ability to bankroll an entire season.

Or the returns from the costs. I mean we have some sponsorships leave the sport entirely. Why, because they do not see a return from being apart of the sport of NASCAR.
ESPN has fired Marty Reid for saying the race was over a lap early. I bet there's more to it than that. You don't fire someone after 30 years after such a minor mistake!

That was pretty bone-headed by an experienced motorsports announcer. He has announced for everything from tractor pulls to monster trucks to NASCAR to IndyCar. Thinking that a white flag is the checkered flag is an issue.
Also, let's remember by the end of 2014, ESPN will only have GRC and NHRA as their only motorsports offerings. ESPN will get rid of the Marty Smiths, Ricky Cravens, Dale Jarretts, Andy Petrees and any other motorsports reporters they have.

Used to be one of the stations would have a race "rundown" where the commentators would sum up the driver's day to that point in the race. While discussing the driver the car would get some camera time. I thought this was clever in the sense of getting a middle to back marker team's sponsor some air time.

Kind of like the Busch race where Mark Martin took the checkered flag one lap too soon..........correction 300 yards

actually the split sponsorship has been around since i got into nascar in the late 60s. only a few teams got a full ride from a single sponsor, like richard petty and david pearson, and a few other top tier teams. the rest had to find sponsorship money from anyone who would bankroll a few races during the season.
Its was a hard race for me to watch.. too many cautions for my taste...
Did anyone else notice the sponsor on Jrs car. Hendrick..
Does anyone else take that as a bad sign???
